Lead Carver/Artist: Ida Bagus Nyoman Suastama
Ida hails from a Balinese village within the central region of the island that perpetuates a long lineage of wood and bone carvers. Learning the trade from his father and grandfather beginning at the age of 12 years old, Ida has been carving for 24 years. He specializes in tribal adornments and small animistic fetishes made from a variety of woods, cow bone, and water buffalo horn. His title "Ida Bagus" comes from the Balinese cast system of the Brahmana, considered a respected cast of the Pedanda (High Priests and Priestesses). "Nyoman" is his title as "child number 3", as all Balinese are named by the number in which they were born, up to the number 4, with the numbers starting over again. In his spare time he cares for his large family's 15 hectares of rice fields and loves going sea fishing.
